For families using a registered home education program under Florida Statute 1002.41, the annual educational evaluation documents progress commensurate with the student’s ability. It is not a requirement to duplicate public-school grading.
Who chooses the evaluation method?
The parent selects from the methods the statute provides and files a copy of the annual evaluation with the district superintendent’s office in the county of residence.
Evaluation methods in Florida law
Options include a portfolio review and student discussion with a qualifying Florida-certified teacher; certain nationally normed achievement testing; a state student assessment under approved conditions; evaluation by a qualifying licensed psychologist; or another valid measurement tool mutually agreed upon by the parent and district superintendent.
Preparing for a portfolio review
Organize enough material to show growth and the rhythm of learning: an activity log, reading list, dated writing samples, math work, projects, photos of hands-on learning, course records, and notes about resources or accommodations.
Questions to ask an evaluator
- Is your Florida certificate current and appropriate?
- What materials should we prepare?
- Is the meeting in person or virtual?
- What is included in the fee?
- When will the signed evaluation be ready?
- Who files it with the district?
Contact an evaluator early, confirm your district’s submission process, and keep proof that the evaluation was filed. This is general educational information, not legal advice.
