Santa Fe Swamp Wildlife and Environmental Area
Bradford County · Nature and watershed learning · Parent-led outing
Explore a Florida wetland with a purpose: use a visit to Santa Fe Swamp Wildlife and Environmental Area to practice observation, map reading and nature journaling. FWC describes a floodplain swamp that helps protect the Santa Fe River and lake system. Hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and wildlife viewing are permitted, subject to current area rules and conditions.
Plan a Bradford County visit
Bradford County lists public access on Southeast 11th Avenue near Starke, approximately half a mile off State Road 100. Use the official map to confirm the entrance and a suitable route before leaving. This is a self-directed natural-area outing, not a booked homeschool class or supervised children's program.
Three simple learning ideas
- Map the water: find the swamp, lake and river on a map. Ask your learner where rainwater might travel and what a wetland can do along the way.
- Keep an observation page: from a permitted route, sketch a plant or record a bird's shape, movement or call. Write what you noticed before trying to identify it.
- Bring the learning home: compare three observations, add the date and location to a journal, and choose one question to investigate at the library.
Before you go
Hunting takes place during designated seasons. Check FWC's current area brochure, hunting dates, closures and visitor rules when choosing a visit. FWC lists no camping at this area. Confirm access, any applicable fees or permits, trail conditions, toilets and accessibility with the land manager; this listing does not promise facilities, admission prices or a particular wildlife sighting.
Keep children with an adult, bring water and appropriate sun and insect protection, stay on permitted routes and observe wildlife from a distance. Choose another outing if weather or access conditions do not suit your family.
